Fig. 28.1 Air-to-Process Fluid Chiller.

DSI offers several types of process fluid chillers to provide cooling for the Gleeble system and its equipment. DSI strongly recommends a dedicated closed-loop system for circulation of chilled process fluid inside the Gleeble and its peripheral equipment. This provides the best thermal stability in order to achieve the best results from the Gleeble system.

A DSI Sales representative can identify the correct chiller for any installation based on location, building requirements, and Gleeble Labratory configuration.

Due to the design of the Gleeble and the process fluid chillers, the chiller must be located at or below the level of the Gleeble, and within 15 m (50 ft) of it. DSI may be able to configure a chiller system that does not meet these requirements, but additional engineering costs may be incurred. A DSI Engineer will need to approve chiller installations more than 3 m (9.8 ft) below the Gleeble system components.

28.1. Selecting the Correct Process Fluid Chiller

The process fluid chiller is an important part of every Gleeble system. Making the right choice of process fluid chiller is vital. Multiple factors must be considered when selecting a process fluid chiller. If the laboratory that is going to house the Gleeble system contains a building-supplied coolant loop, a Water-Cooled Process Fluid Chillers may be appropriate. If no building coolant loop is available an, Air-Cooled Process Fluid Chillers will be required. For Gleeble systems that will be located in an environment that commonly experiences high heat and humidity, a High Ambient Temperature - Air-to-Process-Fluid Chiller may be required. It is important to ensure that the process fluid chiller can cool the Gleeble system efficiently. A DSI Sales representative is uniquely capable of identifying the correct Process Fluid Chiller for any situation.

28.2. Air-Cooled Process Fluid Chillers

28.2.1. Standard Air-to-Process-Fluid Chiller

The Air-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller uses a refrigeration loop to chill a reservoir of process fluid. Chilled process fluid from this reservoir is then pumped to the Gleeble and its equipment by means of a pump located inside the process fluid chiller. The heat that is removed from the chilled process fluid is passed directly into the air around the Air-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller by cooling fans. DSI recommends the Air-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller be placed outdoors on a concrete pad or other suitable structure. The Air-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller can be used indoors, but removing the heat from the area around the Air-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller can be a facilities challenge. If the temperature around the Air-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller gets too high, the process fluid chiller will become ineffective.

Characteristic Specification
Ambient Temperature Maximum 35°C (95°F)
Ambient Temperature Minimum -28°C (-20°F)
Noise Rating 77 dBa
Electrical Power Requirements 380 VAC / 3 Phase / 50 Hz / 15 amp

Danger

The Air-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller is loud and must be isolated from the laboratory area where the Gleeble will be placed. If the decision is made to locate an Air-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller indoors, it is most frequently located in the same sound isolation room as the Gleeble hydraulic power unit.

28.2.2. High Ambient Temperature - Air-to-Process-Fluid Chiller

DSI also offers a high ambient temperature Air-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller for operation in climates where ambient air temperatures are frequently over 35°C (95°F) when the Gleeble will be operating. Locations such as India, South America or Africa require a High Ambient Temperature Air-to-Process-Fluid Chiller. This process fluid chiller is larger than the standard unit.

28.3. Water-Cooled Process Fluid Chillers

28.3.1. Water-to-Process-Fluid Chiller

If the facility where the Gleeble will be located has an existing building supplied process water loop, the Water-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller may be a better solution than the Air-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller. The Water-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller is similar to the Air-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller in that it uses a refrigeration loop to chill the reservoir of process fluid circulated to the Gleeble and its equipment. However, instead of passing heat to the surrounding air, it passes the heat into the water in the building process water loop.

If the facility where the Gleeble will be located has a building process water loop with a flow rate and temperature of 57 L/min at 29.45°C (15 gal/min at 85°F) or 28.4 L/min at 18.9°C (7.5 gal/min at 66°F) and a differential pressure (between the supply and return) of 1.72 bar (25 psi) or greater then the Water-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller is the best water chiller choice.

Characteristic Specification
Building Fluid Flow Rate and Temperature 57 L/min at 29.45°C (15 gal/min at 85°F)
28.4 L/min at 18.9°C (7.5 gal/min at 66°F)
Building Fluid Supply/Return Pressure Difference Minimum 1.72 bar (25 psi)
Ambient Air Temperature Maximum 35°C (95°F)
Ambient Air Temperature Minimum 10°C (50°F)
Noise Rating 72 dBa
Electrical Power Requirements 380 VAC / 20 Amp / 3 Phase / 50 Hz
460 VAC / 20 Amp / 3 Phase / 60 Hz
Process Fluid Reservoir Capacity 136 L (36 gal)
Cooling Capacity With 50 Hz Power 50,000 BTU
Cooling Capacity With 60 Hz Power 60,000 BTU

28.3.2. Heat Exchanger

If the facility where the Gleeble will be located has a chilled water loop, a DSI Heat Exchanger might be the best solution. The DSI Heat Exchanger requires access to a chilled water loop with a temperature of 14.5°C (58°F) or lower, a differential pressure (between the supply and return) of 1.72 bar (25 psi) or greater, and a flow rate of at least 38 L/min (10 gal/min).

The heat exchanger is a direct heat transfer device and contains no refrigeration equipment. It relies on a high efficiency heat exchanger to remove heat directly from the Gleeble cooling process fluid system to the customer supplied chilled water.

The Heat Exchanger is a more economical solution than either the Air-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller or the Water-Cooled Process Fluid Chiller and is the best choice for a facility that has access to chilled water. DSI heat exchangers are very quiet; the only noise emitted is flow noise of the fluid through the Heat Exchanger and the pump that circulates the process fluid to the Gleeble system.

Characteristic Specification
Building Fluid Temperature Maximum 14.5°C (58°F)
Building Fluid Pressure Difference Minimum 1.72 bar (25 psi)
Building Fluid Flow Rate Minimum 38 L/min (10 gal/min)
