27. Vacuum Pumping Systems

Fig. 27.2 Vacuum Pumping System.

The vacuum pumping systems incorporated into a Gleeble thermal-mechanical testing system provide a controlled atmosphere resulting in minimal oxidation of a specimen during elevated temperature tests.

The Gleeble vacuum systems can be customized to provide either a rough vacuum, or high vacuum. Most options of Gleeble vacuum systems can also create an inert gas environment. Supplemented by external compressed inert gas, the vacuum system can remove the existing atmosphere within the vacuum tank then fill the vacuum tank with the inert gas. This backfill process is semi-automated and needs to be repeated any time the vacuum tank door is opened.

Gleeble vacuum systems are controlled, powered, and cooled, as needed, from the Gleeble system. All wire and hose connections come standard with each vacuum system.

27.1. 3000 Series Vacuum Pumping Systems

The Gleeble Vacuum Pumping Systems are designed to perform as an integral part of any Gleeble system. The typical vacuum system contains one diffusion vacuum pump and one rough vacuum pump. The entire unit is controlled from the Gleeble console. The lowest vacuum pressure achievable by the diffusion pump integrated into the 38045 and 38046 systems is 5 x 10-5 Torr. The rough vacuum pump, as part of the 38045 or 38046 systems, or 38050 Standalone Rough Pump can reach a lowest achievable vacuum pressure of 5 x 10-2 Torr. Once activated, the 38045 and 38046 Vacuum Pump systems can automatically transition from rough vacuum to high vacuum operation.

Characteristic Specification Vacuum Pump System

Note

A clean vacuum tank and dry vacuum tank atmosphere (relative humidity less than 60%) are required to achieve the maximum vacuum pressure within 15 minuets.

27.2. 500 Series Vacuum Pumping Systems

The Gleeble Vacuum Pumping Systems are designed to perform as an integral part of any Gleeble system. The typical vacuum system contains one diffusion vacuum pump and one rough vacuum pump. The entire unit is controlled from the Gleeble console. The diffusion pump integrated into the 55310 and 55311 systems can reach a lowest achievable vacuum pressure of 5 x 10-5 Torr. The rough vacuum pump, as part of the 55310 or 55311 systems, and 55312 or 55313 Integrated Rough Pump systems can reach a lowest achievable vacuum pressure of 5 x 10-2 Torr. Once activated the 55310 and 55311 Vacuum Pump systems can automatically transition from rough vacuum to high vacuum operation with pneumatically controlled valves.

The 55312 and 55313 vacuum options are built into the Gleeble 500 Series frame and do not add to the Gleeble system’s overall footprint. These options are a rough pump vacuum only and do not include a diffusion pump or High Vacuum capability.

27.3.3. Diffusion Pump Quick Cool Retrofit

This option accelerates cooling of the diffusion pump to reduce shutdown time and extend the life of the diffusion pump heating element. The Quick Cool circuit is included standard as part of all new Gleeble systems equipped with a diffusion pump. Contact a DSI Service representative for assistance in determining if your vacuum system has the Quick Cool circuit.
