20. Lengthwise Gauges

Lengthwise gauges, commonly referred to as L-Gauges, measure a change in the length of a specimen. These gauges can be secured directly to the specimen or to the jaw assembly. These gauges can be used to calculate the strain experienced by the specimen and can be used to control mechanical movements.

Fig. 20.2 Hot Zone Lengthwise Extensometer - DSI# 39061.

The 39061 Hot Zone Lengthwise Extensometer is an LVDT-based measuring device. The 39061 HZT gauge is a design improvement for the popular 39060 Hot Zone Gauge. Both devices utilize the same LVDT and specimen contact methodologies. However this is where the similarities end. The new 39061’s improved design enables easier gauge installation. The redesign also allows for more consistent gauge placement test to test. Just like the traditional 39060, the new 39061 HZT measures lengthwise strain using alumina and quartz rods in contact with the hot zone of the specimen. The 39061 is equipped with two spacer blocks used to set a defined starting gauge length.

Characteristic Specification
Type LVDT
Defined Gauge Spacer Blocks 10 mm and 25 mm

20.1.4. Hot Zone Lengthwise Strain Gauges

Fig. 20.3 Hot Zone Lengthwise Strain Gauge.

The Gleeble Hot Zone L-Strain Gauges are full-bridge strain gauges equipped with alumina rods that contact the specimen in the hot zone for lengthwise measurement of strain. DSI offers three different Hot Zone Gauges with varying measurement ranges and initial set points.

These gauges feature a unique mounting design. The measurement gauge is held onto the specimen by light, flexible, ceramic fiber cords. These ceramic fiber cords make the gauge nearly self-supporting and eliminate the need for bulky mounting brackets.

The light weight of the gauge combined with the self-supporting design virtually eliminates side loading on the specimen. The combination of radiant heat shields and convection cooling fins allows use of the gauges at elevated specimen temperatures for short periods of time without additional cooling. A valve, regulator, vacuum tank feedthroughs and hoses for additional gas cooling of the gauge are included with the kit. For typical operation, compressed air is used to provide additional cooling to the gauges.
