23. Melting and Solidification

Materials researchers have come to rely on the multi-functionality of Gleeble systems. The unique horizontal specimen mounting of a Gleeble General-Purpose MCU provides the unmatched ability to conduct melting and solidification testing. The full hydraulic capabilities of the Gleeble system remain intact during a melting test. This provides researchers the ability to conduct continuous casting characterization tests, from melting to controlled solidification and deformation.

The liquefied specimen is contained within a quartz crucible by the cooler specimen ends. Once allowed to cool, the specimen solidifies into a single piece, enabling mechanical deformation testing to be conducted.

23.1. Gleeble Remote Control Pendant

The Gleeble Remote Control Pendant is a hardwired remote control for the Gleeble 3000 Series systems. The pendant contains the primary control features available on the Control Console/HMI in a portable option. The pendant gives the Gleeble operator the ability to focus on the specimen view, while keeping the Gleeble controls within easy reach.

23.2. Melt Enhancer

The Melt Enhancer aids in the melting of a specimen by altering the magnetic field in the Gleeble chamber. It prevents excessive electromagnetic stirring of the melt pool which, could cause molten metal to splash out of the crucible.

23.3. Quartz Crucibles

Quartz crucibles are used to contain the liquefied metal during the melt phase of the solidification simulation. Selecting an appropriately sized crucible is important to the success of each test. A crucible that is either two large or too small could cause difficulties during melting. When the inside diameter is too large, the molten metal sinks, and the specimen would be out of shape along the specimen axis. During sinking the thermocouple tends to be detached, which results in a failure of temperature control. If the inside diameter is too small, the tube will break when the specimen is expanding. With the right size of the quartz tube, it is easy to control the melting and solidification. DSI has identified the correct quartz crucible for the most commonly used specimen geometries.
