26.1. Digital Image Correlation

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) can be used in conjunction with a Gleeble system for 3D non-contact optical measurements of deformation and strain. DSI has developed a successful combination of high-performance cameras, lighting, fixturing, and licensed software to produce accurate results, even at elevated temperatures.

Digital Image Correlation can be used on a number of standard Gleeble tests, including tensile tests, Strain Induced Crack Opening (SICO) and, uniaxial compression.

High-resolution cameras and intense blue LED lighting are focused on specimens through the front or rear windows of the Gleeble. DIC systems provide thousands of strain measurements across a specimen, allowing characterization of strain fields in an entire test region. Traditional contact measurement systems provide only 2-point strain measurements – from one point to another point.

26.2. Compatible DIC Systems

DSI has successfully integrated Digital Image Correlation systems from a variety of manufacturers into Gleeble equipment. If you have an existing DIC system, please contact the Gleeble Service Team to confirm compatibility and create an integration plan.

We are now able to offer new DIC systems that have been optimized for Gleeble experiments while also enabling the DIC system to be used on other equipment in your laboratory. DSI has worked extensively to develop a customized suite of equipment including cameras, software, lighting, specimen mounting rotational kits, and specimen preparation solutions.

DSI has partnered with Trilion USA, a GOM / Aramis Certified Partner, to configure an affordable DIC solution ideal for a wide range of Gleeble simulations.

This package includes the primary hardware and software required to add DIC capability to your Gleeble platform. This technology is highly accurate and provides robust data across a specimen, instead of point-to-point measurements.

26.3. DIC Integration Package

Current Gleeble Users

Current Gleeble users can access the 59045 Digital Image Correlation (DIC) Integration Package operator’s manual here.

The 59045 Digital Image Correlation (DIC) Integration Package is designed to better integrate a DIC system with the Gleeble. The package includes a small module (shown below) as well as BNC cables to facilitate a simple and easy-to-use interface between the Gleeble and a compatible DIC system. The 59045 Digital Image Correlation (DIC) Integration Package features the following:

  • A single ±10 VDC output BNC connection for data transmission from the Gleeble to a DIC system.
  • Two ±10 VDC analog input BNC connections for data transmission from a compatible DIC system to the Gleeble.
  • 5 VDC ground referenced pulse trigger for data acquisition synchronization between the Gleeble and a compatible DIC system.
