13. Gleeble Grips

13.1. What Are Gleeble Grips?

Grips are used to “clamp” specimens while testing. There are many different sizes, materials, and geometries of grips to allow for a wide array of applications. Grips are typically characterized by a few parameters; material, size, geometry, and contact area. For more information about the effects of Gleeble Grips and Specimen geometry on the heating characteristics of a test reference the Grips Section of the Gleeble General Testing Guide.

13.1.1. Grip Selection

Selecting the best grips for a particular application is important for good testing in the Gleeble. There are a number of factors that go into grip selection, careful consideration should go into grip selection for each new application in the machine.

Material

The material of the grips can change the heating and cooling characteristics of the specimen. It also has an effect on the thermal gradient of the specimen. DSI offers Copper and Stainless Steel Grips.

Copper grips have a very high thermal conductivity which allows them to cool the specimen down much faster than Stainless steel due to their ability to transfer heat from the liquid cooled wear plate to the specimen faster than stainless steel grips. Consider using copper grips for applications which require fast cooling rates. Another consideration is the electrical conductivity of the grips. Copper has a much higher electrical conductivity than Stainless Steel and this can allow for faster heating rates. However, copper grips can cause the thermal gradient to be very steep (narrow hot zone). This is desirable in some applications, such as hot ductility, welding, and casting, however other applications may require a more isothermal gradient.

Due to the lower electrical conductivity of Stainless steel, the grips themselves become hotter during the test, which makes the specimen more isothermal. Another way to make the specimen more isothermal is to use partial contact or hot grips. The small contact area on the specimen not only increases the electrical resistance, but also reduces the thermal sink. For the most uniform hot zone, consider using Stainless Steel Hot Grips.

Specimen Size

The size of the grips should be selected to match the size of the specimen. For the best performance the tolerance between the size of the specimen and the corresponding surfaces of the grips must be minimized.

Geometry

The geometry of the grips must match the geometry of the specimen. At the specimen to grip interface a round grip must be used to retain a round specimen. Square grips can be used to retain a square specimen. Flat grips are used for flat specimens.

Contact Area

  • Some grips have less contact area than other to change the heating characteristics.

    • Full Contact:

Full Contact grips provide the largest interface surface area between the specimen and the grips. A Full Contact grip will utilized the entire length of the grip to contact the specimen. These grips provide the most efficient heating and cooling rates possible.

    • Partial Contact:

Partial Contact grips provide approximately half the contact area when compared to a Full Contact grip. By reducing the contact area between the grips and the specimen the specimen experiences a greater electrical resistance. The increased resistance results in a larger uniform hot zone on the specimen.

    • Hot Grips:

Hot Grips provide the smallest possible contact area between the grips and the specimen. With a minimal contact surface, and maximum electrical resistance, Hot Grips create the largest uniform hot zone of any Gleeble grips.

13.2. 3000 Series

Designed to specifically fit a Gleeble 3500, 3800, and 3180; 3000 Series Grips build off nearly a century of design, research, and study. This ensures continued accuracy and consistency of testing.

13.2.1. Copper Grips

Copper grips have a very high thermal and electrical conductivity. This allows them to cool the specimen down much faster than Stainless Steel. Due to Copper’s ability to transfer heat from the specimen to the liquid cooled wear plate faster than Stainless Steel grips consider using copper grips for applications which require fast cooling rates.

Another consideration in using Copper grips is the electrical conductivity of the material. Copper has a much higher electrical conductivity than Stainless Steel. This can allow for faster heating rates. However, copper grips can cause the thermal gradient to be very steep (narrow hot zone). This is desirable in some applications, such as hot ductility, welding, and casting, however other applications may require a more isothermal gradient.

13.2.1.1. Round

Matching the geometry and size of the specimen is important to achieve the best Gleeble performance. Specimens that have a round grip contact area must be tested using Round Grips.

13.2.4. Jaw Jacks

Jaw Jacks are used in the Gleeble 3500, 3800, and 3180 to secure the specimen and grip assembly within the General-Purpose Pocket Jaws. Jaw Jacks come in three different styles. Standard U-Jacks can be used for low speed or low-force tension however they are best suited for thermal only tests. Conical Jacks are used in conjunction with Backing Nuts. These jacks are well suited for tension, compression, or thermal only tests of threaded specimens. Heavy Duty Jacks are best suited for compression testing.

13.3. 500 Series

Resized and redesigned specifically for the smaller platform of a Gleeble 500 Series systems these grips retain the exceptional performance of traditional Gleeble grips while increasing use-ability.

13.3.1.1. Round

Matching the geometry and size of the specimen is important to achieve the best Gleeble performance. Specimens that have a round grip contact area must be tested using Round Grips.

13.3.1.3. Flat

Flat grips are used to secure flat, sheet, or strip specimens within the Gleeble system. These grips use a pin to retain the specimen between the grips, enabling tension forces to be applied to the specimen during testing.

_images/5mm_spring_pin.png _images/3-16_tension_pin.png _images/10mm_tension_pin.png
Grips with a 5mm Spring Pin are used for forces up to 18 kN in tension. Grips with a 3/16 inch Tension Pin are used for forces up to 17 kN in tension. Grips with a 10 mm Tension Pin are used for all other tests.

13.3.2. Stainless Steel Grips

13.3.2.1. Round

Matching the geometry and size of the specimen is important to achieve the best Gleeble performance. Specimens that have a round grip contact area must be tested using Round Grips.
